VP Customer Success and Chief Customer Officer are not the same role at different titles. The CCO scope is broader, the comp is higher, and the executive expectations are different. Most growth-stage SaaS companies need a strong VP CS. A smaller subset genuinely need a CCO.

What each role owns

VP Customer Success: The CSM motion, expansion strategy, renewal motion. Reports to the CRO or CEO.

Chief Customer Officer: CS + Customer Support + Implementation/Professional Services + Customer Marketing/Advocacy + Customer Education + Customer Operations. Executive team member. Board-facing.

When the CCO role makes sense

  • You operate multiple customer-facing functions today that would benefit from unified leadership
  • Your ARR is $75M+ and executive customer leadership produces meaningful strategic leverage
  • You’re approaching IPO and need unified customer org for public market story
  • Customer satisfaction is a board-level conversation requiring an executive owner

When VP CS scope is sufficient

  • You’re below $50M ARR
  • Customer support reports elsewhere (often engineering)
  • Professional services is small enough to live within CS
  • Customer marketing is owned by the marketing team

Compensation difference

  • VP CS (Series B-C): Base $200K-$300K, OTE $280K-$425K, equity 0.4%-1.2%
  • CCO (growth-stage): Base $325K-$425K, OTE $475K-$625K, equity 0.5%-1.5%
  • CCO (pre-IPO): Base $400K-$500K, OTE $575K-$750K, equity 0.3%-0.8%

The most common mistake

Promoting VP CS to CCO without expanding the role. The new CCO has a bigger title but doesn’t own additional functions, isn’t on the executive team, has no board exposure, and got a marginal comp bump. Within 12 months they recognize the promotion was cosmetic and leave anyway. Title without scope is title inflation.
