Nothing reshapes a sales search like a clearance requirement. Add “active TS/SCI required” to a job description and your addressable candidate pool drops by more than an order of magnitude — before you have said a word about quota, product, or comp. Yet most hiring managers writing their first cleared sales role treat the clearance line as boilerplate, and the search stalls for reasons no one on the hiring team can articulate.
Here is what the clearance landscape actually means for sales hiring, in plain language.
The Levels, In Practice
- Public Trust: Not a clearance, but a suitability determination. Common for civilian-agency-facing roles. Broadly attainable; minimal effect on your pool.
- Secret: The workhorse clearance for much of DoD-adjacent selling. Meaningful but manageable constraint — many defense-ecosystem sellers hold one.
- Top Secret: A serious filter. Investigation timelines for new grants run long, so roles requiring TS effectively demand candidates who already hold it.
- TS/SCI: Top Secret with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information. This is where the pool gets genuinely small — you are now recruiting from a limited population that every defense prime, IC-facing startup, and Big Tech gov cloud team is also courting.
- Polygraph tiers: Counterintelligence (CI) poly and Full Scope (FS) poly sit on top of TS/SCI for certain IC customers. Full Scope is the scarcest tier of all. The difference between “CI poly acceptable” and “FS poly required” can be the difference between a 10-week search and a 10-month one.
The Questions to Answer Before You Post
Does the role truly require the clearance, or does the mission?
Sellers do not always need to sit in classified spaces to sell products used in them. Sometimes a cleared sales engineer or a cleared customer-success lead covers the classified conversations while the AE runs the unclassified motion. Before writing “TS/SCI required,” map which meetings in the actual sales cycle happen behind the door. If it is two meetings a quarter, there are cheaper answers than a Full Scope AE.
Will you accept crossover, and will you sponsor upgrades?
A candidate cleared with one agency may need their clearance crossed over or read into your customer’s program — timelines vary and are not fully in your control. Similarly, a strong seller holding TS with CI poly might be upgradeable to FS if you are willing to sponsor and wait. Companies that decide their crossover and sponsorship posture before the search move decisively when the right imperfect candidate appears. Companies that have not decided lose those candidates to companies that have.
What is your interim story?
If you sponsor a clearance upgrade, what does the rep sell while they wait? The best answers pair the new hire with cleared colleagues for gated conversations while they run vehicle strategy, unclassified pipeline, and ecosystem development. “Sit tight until you’re read in” is not a plan, and good candidates will probe for one.
What Cleared Sales Talent Costs
The clearance premium is real and rising. An active TS/SCI typically adds 10–20% over an equivalent uncleared profile in the same market; Full Scope poly pushes further. For 2026 OTE bands across Fed and SLED roles, see our companion piece on Fed/SLED account executive compensation benchmarks — and note that cleared national-security-facing AE roles are running $280,000–$300,000+ OTE at growth-stage companies.
One more cost note: cleared candidates rarely apply to postings. Their networks are tight, their current employers work hard to keep them, and many are contractually cautious about how they engage. This is a direct-outreach market, full stop.
Red Flags and Realities
- “Clearable” in a résumé means uncleared. It signals willingness, not status. Price the timeline accordingly.
- Verify early, respectfully. Clearance status, investigation currency, and poly tier should be confirmed in the first screen — through appropriate questions, not requests for documentation that should not leave official channels.
- Do not over-spec. Every unnecessary clearance requirement multiplies your search time and your comp bill. The most common fix we make to a stalled cleared-sales search is downgrading the requirement to what the sales cycle actually demands.
Scope It Right, Then Move Fast
Cleared sales searches reward preparation. Decide the true clearance floor, your crossover and sponsorship posture, and your interim plan before the role goes to market — then move at the speed this small pool requires, because the candidate you want is fielding other calls.
