The most senior enterprise sales roles use three overlapping titles — Strategic Account Executive, Major Account Executive, Named Account Executive. They describe meaningfully different specializations. Hiring the wrong one for your motion is one of the most expensive sales hiring decisions a company makes.
The functional distinction
Strategic Account Executive: Handles the largest, most complex enterprise deals at your company. Typically $500K+ ACV, 12-18+ month cycles, multi-million-dollar lifetime contract values. Manages 4-8 active opportunities at deep level.
Major Account Executive: Handles a defined portfolio of “major” accounts — typically Fortune 500 or specific named enterprise accounts. Could be $300K-$1M+ ACV. Deeper account relationship work, often multi-year engagements.
Named Account Executive: Handles a specific list of named accounts (typically 20-50 accounts), regardless of current revenue. Focused on penetration and expansion within that account list.
Compensation differences
- Strategic AE: Base $200K-$275K, OTE $400K-$600K, equity 0.15%-0.40%
- Major Account Executive: Base $200K-$275K, OTE $400K-$600K, equity similar, often with retention bonuses
- Named Account Executive: Base $175K-$235K, OTE $325K-$475K, often with stronger MBO structure
Which to hire
Strategic AE when you have a small number of very large potential deals and need depth more than breadth.
Major Account Executive when you have a defined list of high-value accounts and want a dedicated multi-year relationship owner.
Named Account Executive when you have specific accounts you want penetrated and the rep has both new business and expansion mandate.
The hiring trap
Confusion between these three titles produces predictable hiring errors. A Strategic AE candidate selling 10 small deals per year is going to struggle in a Named Account role that requires 30+ active conversations across a defined list. Define which specialization your role actually requires.
